A SIMILAR SCENARIO
The ramifications of Megatrends are similar to other recent scenarios.
These five anticipated “endings” suggested how the politics and economics of Florida might someday be reshaped. They were similar, in part, to four recent scenarios that envisioned possible futures for the South Florida region over the next quarter century. (Murley, et al, 2006) The scenarios were defined by two bipolar dimensions: economic prosperity vs. scarcity, and environmental sustainability vs. degradation. Considered most likely was the “Paved Paradise” scenario that foresees an expansionist economy, spurred by foreign trade and investment, which overrides environmental concerns as urban development continues to push into agricultural areas, wetlands, and the Everglades. The four scenarios also anticipated large increases in the Hispanic and elderly populations, serious water shortages, a preponderance of low-paying service jobs, the rising cost of housing, and growing economic and social disparities.
The similarities between these four scenarios and Megatrends' earlier conjectures demonstrate how little the consensus view of Florida's future has changed for over the past few years. Almost everyone agrees on the major trends that will shape the state's politics, demographics, and economics. Of these eventualities, none is considered more important - or more certain - than that the population of seniors will greatly multiply with the retirement of the boomer generation. (Cartlidge, 2006)
The cohesion of the Megatrends network depended on this prediction with its long explanatory reach. If history proves the pivotal prediction to be correct, its contingent predictions become more relevant to our thinking about the future. But should the prediction prove to be wrong, the negation would alert us to a possible trend reversal and cast a wide net of uncertainty about what next to expect.
This is a prediction with important consequences for the future, whether or not it is confirmed by the course of events.
